If admitted, your transcripts would be evaluated, and you would be informed as to which courses you would need to successfully complete for ISU to recommend you for certification.
You may download the undergraduate catalog to see what the basic requirements are for the various teacher education programs. In the catalog, look at the University Wide Teacher Education section to see the list of the various teacher education programs that we offer and general teacher education requirements. If you wish to teach secondary education (6-12), your major will be in the college housing the subject you would like to teach. For instance, to become a high school business teacher, you would major in Business Teacher Education in the College of Business.
The amount of time it will take to complete a program depends on what you choose as your area to become certified in. Until you apply for admission into one of the teacher education programs and your transcripts are formally evaluated, the length of time it would take to complete a program cannot be determined. If you choose to teach in an area that you do not already have a major, it will take you longer than working towards teacher certification in an area that you already have a degree. In general, this could take you anywhere from 1½ to 3 years.
In Illinois people that hold a bachelor's degree in any field may apply for a Substitute Teacher Certificate. Certification is handled through the Regional Office of Education.
